Canon 5D Mk IV – EF 100mm Macro – One Einstein 640W Strobe – 1/160, f/20, ISO 100, Partial Meter
The Photo of the Day was an experiment in macro bubble art. The idea is simple, take close up pictures of bubbles. The execution is a little more complicated. I “borrowed” some of my granddaughter’s bubble juice and put it in a blue shot glass. I set this on a black background. The camera was on a tripod, tethered to the computer, and had the remote attached. I had one Einstein with a softbox set up directly overhead about 5 inches from the top of the glass. I grabbed a straw and lightly blew into the bubble mix to generate bubbles.
The hard part here was getting the right aperture setting. I settled on f/20 because it allowed me to get more of the bubbles in focus. Ideally, this lense’s sweet spot is around f/11. However, focus stacking is out of the question since the bubbles do not last long. So the large aperture, and experimenting with the best focal point, provided quite a few pictures to choose from.
All post processing was done in Lightroom. The colors are all natural. The one thing I would like to try and do is to photograph a single large bubble against a black background. If anyone has any ideas on how to get the bigger bubble, I’m all ears.
Very neat!
