5D Mk IV – SpeedLite 580EX II off-flash on Pocket Wizard – 1/200, f/10, ISO 100

Decided I’d continue working with the new 50mm prime. I feel it seems somewhat idiosyncratic in its focusing. I used it yesterday with mostly moving subjects – the focus wasn’t bad, but I feel it could have been better. Since it was nicer weather today, I went out on the back deck. I chose the hummingbird feeder in the direction of the deck stairs. We had a brisk wind and the feeder was moving, but not excessively. I set the SpeedLite on a Pocket Wizard off camera. I wasn’t very concerned about depth of field but wanted to capture the essence of the stairs, so aperture was 10. Shutter mode was high speed continuous, and Servo mode was the autofocus. I only took 4 photos in this setup and all were in focus. This one, in particular was spot on. The focus point was the yellow flower just off center to the left. Pretty soon we’ll have hummingbirds!

I will tell you this: when the aperture on this lens is set to 1.2, the bokeh is oh so buttery. More on that later.
