5D Mk IV, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L II – 2x Extender – 1/1000, f/5.6, ISO 640

Today turned out to be a telephoto day. It was 73 degrees outside so I sat on the back deck with camera in hand and waited. Lot’s of birds with a smidgen of squirrels running around the yard. The silhouette photo was one of the first pics I took. I saw the bird, later on, go into the tree branch so there must be a nest in there. I’ll keep my eye out for future images. As for the silhouette, those are easy. Expose for the light and the shadows will be darker. I like how the light was hitting the top of the branch and bird, so I didn’t do much post-processing and I didn’t make it a true silhouette.

For the Photo of the Day, that image is huge. The Robin was a fair distance away from me; it was sitting in the runway. I put the camera in what’s called dual pixel raw – doing this doubles the file size. I knew I’d have to do considerable cropping so I needed a lot of image to work with. Given the amount of crop, I was happy with the resolution of the bird. Now, if I can get them closer.

For both pics, I had the camera set to Time Value mode (I wanted a shutter speed of 1/1000), ISO set to Auto, drive was Servo, and Shutter Speed was high speed continuous.

EDIT: After posting today’s images, I was actually on my cell phone looking at the silhouette photo when I noticed a beak inside the branch; so there were two birds and one was inside! Goes to show I need to pay better attention to detail!
