THE BEST OF 2022

Well folks, this will probably be the last major post I make about the 2022 Project 365. What I have done here is attempt to pick the absolute best images that made the Photo of the Day during Project 365 in the year 2022. There are 28 images represented here. This means that out of 15,329 photos taken during the year, only .18% made the cut to be the best. I suspect this list might be open for discussion. Why […]

I’ll have another update or so later this week but first, let’s review some Project 365 statistics:

DAY 365 – DECEMBER 31, 2022

‘The Fini PotD’ 5D Mk IV – EF 16-35mm F/2.8L – 640W Strobes (x3) – 1/200, f/11, ISO 100, Eval Meter Well my Peeps, we did it! All good things must end, this includes Project 365. I thought and thought what the final PotD should be and ultimately, Roxie gave me the best advice – be festive. Since it’s New Years Eve, I thought I’d make this PotD festive and unique. Roxie had the idea for the champagne. I then […]

Canon G7 X Mk II – 1/30 sec, f/2, ISO 125, Eval Meter Well here we are, one day left. It’s been quite the journey and now we have one photo left to post. But more on that tomorrow. Today we celebrated my first full day of retirement. I was limited in the available pics, and in fact, this is a guest PotD. We went to Outback for supper and Colin was seated in between Ryan and I. Steph noticed […]

5D Mk IV – Ef 16-35mm F/2.8L – 640W Strobe – 1/15, f/6.3, ISO 100, Spot Meter What a day. In the SOMA Global world, today will forever be known as ‘The Purge’. Last week I told HR I was going to retire. I had my letter written and was planning on giving it to them tomorrow. Since so many people were off for the holidays, I was going to go easy and give them 2 weeks – mid January […]

5D Mk IV – EF 16-35mm F/2.8L – 640W Strobe – 0.4 sec, f/6.3, ISO 100, Eval Meter Well I only thought it be appropriate to show where much of the post-processing magic takes place. Here I am working in Lightroom. In this case, I’m reviewing a photo in a folder called Best of 2022. Getting a pic like this can be a bit tricky to the uninitiated. I have my 5D sitting on a tripod. Right over it is […]

PS5 – 1/60, f/16 Today I got back into racing – Gran Turismo 7 Racing that is. A few years ago, I got GT Sport and a racing wheel. Well, this past March, GT 7 was released. I haven’t spent much time on it as other things got in the way. But this really is a very realistic driving simulator. In this PotD, You see me racing in the white car on the left on the Daytona Speedway. Daytona is […]

5D Mk IV – EF 100mm F/2.8 Macro – 640W Strobes (x2) – 1/200, f/13, ISO 100, Eval Meter This PotD is officially the first photo session where I used my new Paul C. Buff HUB remote. This unit replaces my broken Cyber Commander to manage my Einstein strobes. Let me tell you, it is so much easier to use this than the Cyber Commander. The HUB sits on the camera’s hot shoe and is managed by an app on […]

5D Mk IV – EF 16-355mm F/2.8L – 580 EX II SpeedLite – 1/125, f/4, ISO 200, Eval Meter Merry Christmas Everyone! We had a Christmas party at Steph and Ryan’s today. That’s where the PotD took place. The pic is one of Colin enjoying his storytelling toy. Don’t ask me how it works – something about putting the figure on the device and slapping the side of it. Anyway, the pic was easy to take. The hard part is […]

5D Mk IV – EF 16-35mm F/2.8L – 580 EX II SpeedLite – 1/60, f/6.3, ISO 100, Eval Meter Well the tradition continues! Lasagna on Christmas Eve! Here’s what’s in this bad boy: 16 lasagna noodles, 3 lbs seasoned hamburger, 2 lbs cottage cheese, 2 lbs spaghetti sauce, 6 oz of pizza sauce, and 1.5 lbs of shredded mozzarella cheese. Baking this in the oven at 350 for a minimum of 1 hour 15 minutes. Then broil for a few […]

5D Mk IV – EF 16-35mm F/2.8L – EX 580 SpeedLite – 1/125, f/6.3, ISO 100, Spot Meter As promised, here’s the Winter Storm PotD. Doesn’t look too bad, snow-wise. But that wind is howling over 30 miles an hour. With a temp of -6 degrees, that puts the wind chill at a brisk -35 degrees! I did some things different for this pic. I set the aperture to 6.3 (helped to get more in focus) and increased the flash […]

5D Mk IV – EF 16-35mm F/2.8L – 580EX II SpeedLite – 1/60, f/2.8, ISO 100, Spot Meter Remember the saying ‘Expose for the ambient, fill with the flash’? This is another window type photo I took to show what it looks like now before the big winter storm. A shot like this is a bit of trial and error. The key, in my opinion, is to set your meter to spot since you want to expose for what’s on […]

DJI Mini 2 – 1/120, f/2.8, ISO 200, CWA Meter Well It’s been awhile since I flew the drone so I decided to get the Mini 2 up in the air (still haven’t flown the new one). I took the usual back farmland pics, and windmills, etc. As I was bringing her in, I thought I’d get a shot of the pilot. I did have the camera set to manual, so all the settings were mine. Not a hard pic […]

Canon G7 X Mk II – 1/400, f/11, ISO 125, Eval Meter Remember the other day when I said I was reviewing all the photos I’ve taken this year? Well that continues. This is another series of gems I found that hadn’t been turned into a panorama. The island to the left, Rabbit Island, was pictured on Day 135 as a secondary picture (May 22, the same day I took this). However, I like panoramas, and I spent quite a […]

NetVue Birdfy Camera – No Exposure Info Surprise guest photo today! This is a screenshot from Steph and Ryan’s new bird feeder camera. Is it unfortunate that the squirrel had to be the first photo from it? Or maybe it wasn’t, but this is the first I’ve seen of it. When Steph sent this, I had a strong hunch it would be the PotD. This is similar to the GoPro shots I took of pigeons in the grass out front. […]

‘The Window’ GoPro Hero 10 Black – 1/250, f/2.5, ISO 112, CWA Meter This PotD actually was taken on May 17, 2022. You see, with the PotD project coming to an end, I’m taking some time to go back and review all the photos I’ve taken (thousands, but more on that in another post). I am compiling a small group of pics that I’m calling the ‘Best of 2022’. This is just a fraction of all the photos I’ve taken […]

5D Mk IV – Ronin S – 1/125, Various f/stops, ISO 200, Eval Meter This PotD, while just a backyard panorama, is a number of firsts for me. This is not just any panorama though. It was created using my Ronin S gimbal using its panorama program. This is actually my largest photo panorama merge – 35 pictures – 5 layers from top to bottom and 7 images across. As for size, this is also the largest photo file I’ve […]

Canon G7 X Mk II – 1/320, f/4, ISO 125 I took numerous photos today……….and wasn’t really keen on any of them. I decided that I’d go with this pic since it’s pretty much a picture of…………. ‘Nothing’. I can now positively say that ‘Nothing’ doesn’t have to be beautiful. I have 5 ‘Beauty of Nothing’ Photos of the Day. This is definitely not one of those. Oh, the reason I shot it was because it was snowing harder than […]

5D Mk IV – EF 24-70mm F/2.8L – 2 sec, f/10, ISO 100, Eval Meter Nothing fancy here other than a focus stacked (7 pics) picture of our new mixer. I got this yesterday based on a really good recommendation I heard. Last night I made the original Nestle Toll House chocolate chip cookie recipe. This thing is the Clydesdales of mixers! It powered through thick cookie dough like it was water! One thing to note, I originally tried using […]

5D Mk IV – EF24-70 F/2.8L – 5 seconds, f/10, ISO 100, Eval Meter I had a weird idea this morning and I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of it before. I thought “what would happen if you changed the focal length of a picture during the course of taking that picture?”. The initial results were kind of dismal. Similar to an out of focus double exposure. But I remembered that when taking fireworks, you take long exposures. I […]

5D Mk IV – EF 100 f/2.8 Macro – 640W Strobes (x2) – 1/200, f/6.3, ISO 100, Eval Meter This is what I was trying to accomplish yesterday. You may remember the Cicada shell from August 17 (Day 229). Roxie found a small dried up, dead bee in the house so I thought I’d pair these two up and practice more focus stacking. This is a stack of 60 images. I could have focused a little further out since it looks […]

5D Mk IV – EF 100mm F2.8 Macro – 580EX II SpeedLite – 1/60, f/5.6, ISO 100, Eval Meter First Thing to note is that this was not supposed to be the Photo of the Day. While it’s a pic of my new Virtual Reality Racing Drone (87 mph baby), I intend to take a better picture of this drone in flight. I’m not going to tell you what the PotD was supposed to be because I’m going to try […]

Canon G7 X Mk II – 1/30, f/2, ISO 125, Eval Meter We took Mason to get his beautification treatment at Petsmart today. I brought the little G7 and inside the store, I had a photo op with this little bird. It was just sitting on the thingy thing letting me take his pic. Kinda cute. Nothing special about the pic – expose and snap. I’ve said it before, but this little camera’s stabilization continues to amaze me; 1/30 sec […]

1/100, f/3.2, ISO 125, Eval Meter Today I went to the grocery and, per usual, I brought my trusty G7. There is a train track that runs through Battleground and Brookston. Over the course of this project, there is one location where I took many a pic but never really liked the shot.Today was different. Maybe it’s because it was cloudy and rainy today. I added a post-processing preset in Lightroom called ‘Aged Photo’. I then bumped the contrast up […]

5D Mk IV – EF 50mm F/1.2L – 1/30, f/4, ISO 100, Eval Meter Well Today’s PotD is a kind of a result of me being tired and a bit lazy. A full day at work doesn’t leave much time for photos. However, it is Christmas time so I thought I’d take another holiday pic. This one is of lights in our downstairs room strung along a ledge. It’s not a macro shot or anything fancy. The camera was placed […]

5D Mk IV – EF 50mm f/1.2L – 580 EX II SpeedLite – 1/200, f/6.3, ISO 100, Eval Meter Happy Pearl Harbor Day – the Day of Infamy! I was thinking of doing a PotD that was Pearl Harbor related. That was until I saw the inside of my smoker. I was going to roast a chicken and went outside to prep my smoker. When I opened the lid I saw acorns literally stuffed in the exhaust tube. There was […]

5D Mk IV – EF 50mm F/1.2L – 640W Strobe (x1) – 1/200, f/6.3, ISO 100, Eval Meter This is another focus stacked project. Today I used an extension tube on my 50mm prime. I first tried a 36mm tube, but I had to get the lens crazy close in order to focus. So close that it was blocking the light. I then switched to a 12mm tube and that gave me about 3 inches away from the lens. Speaking […]

‘The Tree’ Canon G7 X Mk II – 1/125, f/10, ISO 125, Eval Meter Sometimes you take a photo, or in this case a series of photos, where you just need to go back and make it a PotD. This happened at least once before with the photo of the seagulls on the beach in Florida, In this case, I did intend to make this a PotD, just not on the day I took it. This is a panoramic merge […]
